Reports: Leicester City targeting Zack Steffen for summer transfer

Zack Steffen enjoyed a positive loan spell in the English Football League Championship last season and now is reportedly set for a permanent move back to the second-tier.

Leicester City is targeting Steffen for a potential transfer from Manchester City, multiple reports stated Wednesday. Steffen would be reunited with new Foxes boss Enzo Maresca, who previously worked at Manchester City as an assistant on Pep Guardiola’s staff.

Steffen, 28, registered 10 clean sheets in 44 league appearances for Middlesbrough this season, helping Michael Carrick’s squad reach the promotion playoffs. The U.S. men’s national team shot stopper had previously been linked with a potential long-term move to Middlesbrough, but now looks to be on the verge of joining the recently relegated Foxes.

Steffen joined Man City in July 2019, but has mainly served as a backup to Brazilian international Ederson during his time there. He has made 21 senior appearances for Man City, registering eight clean sheets across all competitions.

The Pennsylvania native has earned 29 caps for the USMNT to date but hasn’t featured since March 2022. He recently missed Concacaf Nations League duty following a knee procedure at the conclusion of his club campaign.

Leicester City suffered relegation from the English Premier League in May and currently has Danny Ward and Daniel Iversen in its goalkeeping ranks.
