To Europe, China is a conditional partnership

LONDON – At the end of a trip to Beijing in early April, French President Emmanuel Macron told journalists that the European Union should not be a “follower” of the United States’ policy on China, particularly not on Taiwan. The island, he added, is “not our crisis”.

His statement outraged many European politicians, who pointed out that Europe cannot expect to continue getting US protection but offer no support to Washington in the Asia-Pacific region.
