March 27, (THEWILL) – The leadership of the Labour Party (LP), led by its embattled National Chairman, Barr. Julius Abure, on Wednesday, defied the series of protests by major party stakeholders, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), to hold a planned secret national convention.

THEWILL reports that the national convention, which will elect national officers of the party, is holding at the Grand Seasons Hotel in Nnewi, Anambra State, amid tight security.

Earlier, the NLC had asked the Julius Abure-led leadership of the LP to shelve the “secret” national convention.

The Congress had in a statement on Friday, March 15, accused Abure of running the Labour Party as a Sole Administrator by secretly scheduling a supposed national convention of the Party without consulting stakeholders.

Members of the NLC had on Wednesday, March 20, occupied the National headquarters of the Labour Party in Abuja, calling for Abure’s sack as National Chairman of the party.

Also, Mr. Lawrence Erewele, a member of the Labour Party, on Monday, asked the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court to stop Abure from proceeding with plans to hold the “secret convention” which lacked the authority of Party stakeholders and general consultation of party members, and as well violates several Articles of the Labour Party Constitution and the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.

Meanwhile, five persons have been arrested at the venue of the convention.

A party source, who confirmed the arrest, accused them of trying to cause a crisis at the ongoing convention by distributing inciting leaflets critical of the leadership of the party.
